Finally Here! Oracle Database 26ai LTS for Linux x64 is Available for Download

Oracle Database 26ai LTS is finally available for on-premise Linux x64 environments! Let's clear up the 23c/23ai naming confusion, explore the hidden stability benefits of its "cloud-first" release, and check out the official support roadmap to help you plan your next upgrade.

After a long wait, the moment has arrived: Oracle's latest Long Term Support (LTS) release, 26ai, is finally available for download for the Linux x64 platform (On-Premise)!

This is a major milestone for database administrators and IT operators. We have been waiting a long time to bring these latest innovations into our own datacenters. But what does this mean exactly, and how should you approach the transition?

23c? 23ai? No, it's 26ai now!

The first and most important thing to clear up is the version number confusion. Many of you might remember that this release was originally announced as Oracle 23c. Later, as the focus on artificial intelligence grew, it was renamed to 23ai, and finally, with this current release, it received the 26ai designation.

It is important to emphasize: under the hood, the core engine is the same. This version is the direct continuation and finalization of the original 23c/23ai line. Only the name has changed to reflect the release year and the deep integration of AI capabilities.

New but Mature? The Advantage of "Cloud-First"

Although it just arrived for on-premise environments, this software has actually been running in production since 2023. Until now, it was exclusively available in Oracle Cloud (OCI), Exadata, and ODA (Oracle Database Appliance) environments.

Why is this great news for us running databases on our own hardware?

My personal expert opinion is that while 26ai seems like a "fresh" installer, we do not need to fear the initial growing pains and severe bugs typical of new major releases. Think about it: the servers running in the cloud are also powered by Linux x64. This means Oracle engineers and cloud customers have been testing, stressing, and patching this codebase in live production for nearly 3 years. The critical bugs you would normally fear in a "v1.0" release have long been fixed in the cloud. As a result, we are receiving a highly stable and mature version right out of the gate.

What Does the Future Hold? Roadmap and Support

A new release always begs the question: when do we need to upgrade? Let's look at the numbers and the official support cycles (see the attached roadmap):

Oracle Database Releases and Support Timelines

Source: Oracle Support Note 742060.1

  • Oracle 19c: Premier Support for the most widely used current LTS release runs until December 31, 2029.

  • Oracle 26ai: Premier Support for the new LTS release currently ends on December 31, 2031.

What does this mean in practice? There is no reason to panic, and no need to rush an "in-place" upgrade next week. Oracle 19c still provides a safe and supported foundation for years to come.

However, looking at the 2031 date invites a bit of speculation. If we look back at previous, highly successful LTS versions (like 11gR2 or 19c), Oracle has a history of significantly extending support cycles beyond original plans. While it is just speculation, I wouldn't be surprised if the 26ai lifecycle followed a similar path in the future.

What Should You Do Now?

While there is no immediate pressure, it is definitely time to start planning your upgrade strategy.

This is especially true for software development companies and businesses that deliver applications built on Oracle databases. Now is the time to download 26ai, spin up a test environment, evaluate how your application behaves, and start leveraging the new features (e.g., JSON Relational Duality, AI Vector Search).

I Am Already Testing It!

I didn't wait any longer: I have already started testing the installation procedures and upgrade paths in my lab. I am continuously gathering data on migration strategies and performance metrics.

If the future of your database is a current topic at your company, or if you are unsure about your upgrade strategy, feel free to reach out! I would be happy to help you plan and support your own database upgrade processes to ensure a smooth transition.
